Frequently Asked Questions
Painted Denim FAQs
-
I use acrylic paint (Amsterdam or Golden) mixed with fabric medium. The Art Supplies page has a full list of the supplies I use and recommend.
-
Yes! All my painted jeans are machine-washable on the delicate cycle, turned inside-out or hand-washable turned inside-out in cold or warm water with a mild detergent.
Read my guide about How to Wash Painted Denim for all the details, including the important steps to take during the painting process before you wash your painted jeans or jacket.
-
No, you do not need to use any sort of top coat over your painted denim.
You just need to use fabric medium mixed into your acrylic paint (not needed if you used fabric paint) and then heat-set when you have completely finished painting.
-
The majority of jeans and jackets I have painted were thrifted from local thrift stores! You can also source second-hand denim from selling apps like Depop and Poshmark.
If you want new jeans or denim jackets, I absolutely love the 100% cotton jeans from Abercrombie, Levis, and Madewell!
